Understanding Short Blade Swim Training Fins

by Ian Hancock 23 Oct 2026

Why fin choice matters more than most swimmers realise

Walk onto any poolside and you'll see swimmers wearing all sorts of training fins. Some are extremely short and stiff, others are wider and more powerful, while some sit neatly in the middle as an all-round training tool.

The truth is that there isn't one "best" swim fin.

Different fin designs place different demands on the swimmer and can help develop specific aspects of technique, fitness and kicking performance.

At Swimz, we currently offer three distinct fin styles:

  • Swimz Missile Fins
  • Swimz Short Blade Silicone Fins
  • Swimz Turbine Pro Fins

Each has been designed for a different training goal.

Understanding Kick Tempo

Before comparing the fins, it's worth understanding one key concept: kick tempo.

Kick tempo is simply the speed of your kick cycle.

Some fins allow swimmers to maintain a kick rate that is very close to normal swimming, while others deliberately slow the kick and increase resistance to build strength and propulsion.

The best fin for the session depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Swimz Missile Fins

Best for: Tempo, Speed and Sprint Training

The Swimz Missile Fin features an ultra-short blade design.

Because there is less blade extending beyond the foot, swimmers can maintain a very high kick rate that closely resembles normal swimming.

This makes Missile Fins particularly useful for:

  • Sprint sets
  • Race pace training
  • Fast freestyle and butterfly work
  • Improving kick turnover
  • Neuromuscular speed development

The sensation is often described as feeling "light" and responsive.

When swimming at race pace, these fins help swimmers maintain rhythm without creating excessive resistance.

Choose Missile Fins if your goal is speed and kick frequency.

Swimz Short Blade Silicone Fins

Best for: Everyday Training

For many swimmers, the Short Blade Silicone Fin is the most versatile option.

The blade is slightly longer than the Missile Fin, creating a balance between kick tempo and resistance.

This allows swimmers to maintain good stroke timing while gaining additional propulsion and training load.

Benefits include:

  • All-round training use
  • Kick technique improvement
  • Improved ankle flexibility
  • Development of leg strength
  • Suitable for aerobic and speed sessions

Because they strike a balance between speed and resistance, they are often the fin most swimmers reach for during a typical club session.

If you only own one pair of fins, a short blade silicone fin is usually the safest and most versatile choice.

Choose Short Blade Silicone Fins if you want one fin that can handle almost every session.

Swimz Turbine Pro Fins

Best for: Power and Propulsion

The Turbine Pro takes a different approach.

A wider blade creates significantly more water resistance, encouraging swimmers to generate greater force throughout the kick.

The design helps create propulsion on both the downbeat and the upbeat phase of the kick.

Benefits include:

  • Increased propulsion
  • Leg strength development
  • Power-focused kick sets
  • Underwater dolphin kick training
  • Building a stronger connection with the water

The trade-off is that kick tempo is generally lower than with a Missile or Short Blade fin.

However, that's exactly the point.

The Turbine Pro is designed to make swimmers work harder and develop greater power output.

Choose Turbine Pro Fins if your goal is strength, propulsion and kicking power.

Which Swimz Fin Is Right For You?

Training Goal Best Choice
Sprint Speed Missile
Race Pace Training Missile
Everyday Club Sessions Short Blade Silicone
Technique Development Short Blade Silicone
Ankle Flexibility Short Blade Silicone
Leg Strength Turbine Pro
Underwater Kicking Turbine Pro
Propulsion Development Turbine Pro

Final Thoughts

One pair of fins can be a great starting point, but different sessions create different demands.

Think of swim fins in the same way as a swimmer might think about paddles, pull buoys or drag shorts. Each tool has a specific purpose and can help develop different aspects of performance.

The key is choosing the fin that matches your training objective.

Want maximum kick tempo? Choose Missile.
Want one fin for almost everything? Choose Short Blade Silicone.
Want power and propulsion? Choose Turbine Pro.
